This is a long time coming – launching my own online portfolio that is. I’m a ceramic artist from Maine. I’m a graduate of the Maine College of Art (MECA) with a bachelor of fine arts degree in ceramics.
My journey to today has been a long one. I’ve always identified myself as an artist, I grew up making things and drawing. I was known as the kid who won all the school art contests. I was voted class artist in high school and the first person from my family to go to college, where I chose to study art. I found my passion of ceramics in the process.
Art was my identity. It is my internal identity, but life happens. After college I worked my way up at a local gallery to be the gallery manager, determined to create a life surrounded by art, to inspire me to create my own, but as we know life happens in ways we don’t always expect. I got married, we purchased a house that needed much work and then the gallery owners retired and I needed a job. I found an amazing one that took my career in another direction, a good direction, but the wrong direction from my art. Years have passed. I live an amazingly bless life with my husband, our two children, but I missed my art. My identity felt lost. I felt lost and then I realized why. I was not being true to myself and allowing my anxiety and self doubt to take me over.
I made a choice to be the artist I am inside. I began to create again and I’m working to make art part of my daily routine, in particular my art. I’ve in the last year started to sell my work, promote myself and gain the confidence I lacked the past several years. It is a process, but one that I am ready to dive into.
I am many things now, I play many roles, but inside and out I’m an artist.
